Juror of Selection’s Statement
“One of the attributes I look for when selecting pieces of art for a particular show, are paintings of ordinary subjects which are painted in a unique and different way. There are many facets of art that an artist can think about to come up with an unusual way to depict a subject which has been painted many times before. Along with this, I look for and consider strong design patterns - are the elements in a painting positioned correctly on the painting surface in order to lead the viewers eye to the center of interest? I also try to find artwork that is painted with a pleasing color scheme - one that complements the subject being painted. At the same time, I will consider how all the elements are rendered in each painting. I will take into  consideration if there is a command of the technique that was used to create them. Lastly, I feel very strongly about quality drawing. The paintings I select must show me that the artists understand this art principle - is there a refinement to these works of art?
There were examples of all the things I’ve mentioned in the show I have selected, which will make it interesting and pleasing to all viewers. Congratulations to “Papa” and everyone else who is involved with this fine show.”
Bill James AWS, NWS, KA, PSA-M, MoWS

Juror of Awards’ Statement
Given the fact that 434 paintings were entered in the Missouri National 2008, having work included in the exhibition is an achievement in itself. The level of was very high and that quality level was represented by a total of 80 paintings. I was assigned to present approximately one quarter of them with awards. A few thoughts and criteria that were basic to choices: [1] Everything that gets into a work of art gets in by an act of choice. In the hierarchy of things - the subject is often of little importance. If the design, values, and color elements are working then the subject can be anything. [2] Usually an artist has only a few moments to capture someone’s interest -composition, light and shadow are paramount - color and detail will prolong the moments. The above wisdom is an accumulation from others, but has become my wisdom as well, and it guides me in producing my art work. I looked for the ability of the various works in this show to produce a prolonged response, to make me mutter under my breath, “wish I had painted that.” Being asked to serve as the Juror of Awards for the 2008 Watercolor Missouri National was both an honor and privilege. I would like to offer my special thanks to Papa Tutt and the Board of Directors who made this project possible. It has been a very enjoyable and professional experience, to be put high on my list of art related accomplishments.
