The Fourth Annual
Watercolor Missouri National Exhibition

The online version of the fouth annual Watercolor Missouri National consists of three "galleries". All one hundred and ten entries from the show are on display here. The paintings are displayed in alphabetical order by the artists' last name.

Please remember that the low resolution of the images here cannot do justice to the beauty of the actual paintings. But we hope to give you a representative view of the show.

All images that appear on this site are copyrighted by the individual artists and may not be legally duplicated or used for any other purpose without the consent of the artist.

Please use the buttons above to enter the galleries. You may click on the thumbnails to view the enlarged versions of the paintings. Award winners are indicated in the galleries, as well as below. Enjoy the show!

JUDGE’S STATEMENT
from Hugh Greer,
Judge of Missouri Watercolor National, 2004

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Let me tell you about making decisions. I take my job as a judge very seriously. If I told you how many times I went through the 457 slides, you probably wouldn’t believe me.

I certainly consider it an honor and a privilege to judge the caliber of artists that I reviewed for the Missouri Watercolor Society. It is always a learning experience for me when I judge a show. This was no exception. I saw paintings that took weeks to complete and some that were done in a measure of minutes. I appreciate the diverse skill that goes into both processes. All the works that were chosen stimulated me. Inspiration is what we are about. We are artists because we are stimulated and inspired by something and have a need to recreate it, thereby inserting a bit of ourselves for others to see. Our individual approach to painting varies and the end result of our paintings is (hopefully) unique.

There are 110 artists that absolutely agree with my choices. And there are 149 who feel slighted. For those whose work has been rejected, let me tell you a short
story about two artists I know who received rejection notices only to go on with those particular pieces of
art and win another competition! This is not the place to mention names, but trust me, it happens! So don’t let a rejection notice slow you down! Keep working hard and continue to enter new shows.
The last point I want to pass on to you is the importance of presenting your art in the best manner possible. I was amazed at how many good artists sent in bad slides. The image should either be taped off by using a special silver tape for slides, or have the image
fill the entire slide area. A good presentation of a slide is the easiest part of the competition!! Its importance should not be underestimated. I did not disqualify anyone for a bad slide, but instead I used it as a tiebreaker. When I had trouble deciding on which
slide to choose, I chose the slide that had been presented best: the artist who took the time and trouble to tape their slides and to present their images as cleanly as possible. Let me tell you what a bad slide tells a judge: “I’m just beginning this competitive adventure and I haven’t a clue as to what I’m doing” or “I’m so good the judge will look past my hurried presentation.” Judging should be about the art, not the slide, but when the slide is presented in a sloppy way it takes away from the art itself! Who needs that?

I want to thank the Missouri Watercolor Society for asking me to serve as judge for their 4th annual National show. I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. It’s been a pleasure viewing your work!

Sincerely,
Hugh Greer
